Hey ya’ll,
So I told you we would have updates from our youth that went on the Youth Bike Summit trip with us. I lied a little bit. They were asked to write up a summary of their experiences, but like most teenagers when we gave them extra work to do they were all like…

However, Omari sent in photos he took! He did not write a summary up, but he brought along his camera to give us a little bit of a glimpse into the world of the Youth Bike Summit.

I posted all of the photos he took over at our facebook page, but I’m going to post a few select ones here.
I’ll add some commentary so it isn’t just photos you are seeing…

It all started with us piling into a rental van early on Friday morning and driving all the way to NYC.

We found our hostel where we would live for the weekend. There were youth from other bike shops staying there as well including those from Bikes not Bombs in Boston!

The pool table was a common meeting place. Our youth met folks from all over the world there.

At the first day of the summit we got a chance to hear three keynote addresses. Two from young adults and one from Olympic medal winner Nelson Vails. It was a good start to Saturday.

After a day of marching in the streets, going to workshops and meeting others, we headed back to the hostel.

On Sunday there was a visioning session where we all worked together to tackle the world’s problems (okay, not really, but we planned how the youth bike movement could work together nationally).

By having four youth participating in the summit this year and having this be the third year staff has participated in the event – we put Detroit on the map…

literally.

Thanks for the photos Omari! If you know any of our other MITs – Ian, Duane or Shamar make sure to tell them it is a shame that you haven’t gotten the chance to hear about their experiences.
