Hey everyone,
The internet has made taking political action much easier. Before you had to write a letter by hand and mail it to a representative. Now you can just send an email! There are groups that make it so all you have to do is click a few buttons to send their pre-written letter to your representative.
I’m asking you to do that today.
The League of American Bicyclists have set up such a form. They are trying to get folks to contact their representatives so the Department of Transportation will prioritize the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. They’ve got all the facts of why this is so important, but I’ve got a personal story.
To not get into too many details, one of the youth from our shop was hit by a truck last week. Not only was he hit, but he was dragged 200 feet before the driver stopped. Luckily he is doing fine, but he had to have multiple surgeries to repair his knee which was ripped up after being lodged under the wheel of the truck.
While talking to him on the phone this week he said, “I hope I can get some money so I can buy a car. I don’t want to bike places now.”
We are really happy that his leg is going to heal, but I can’t blame this youth for not wanting to ride after having gone through such a traumatic event. This youth rides EVERYWHERE too. He loves bikes and that is being taken from him.
What happened to the driver in this situation? Nothing. He didn’t even get a ticket. The youth from our shop wasn’t breaking the law, the driver was clearly at fault and after mutilating a child, he got to just drive away.
