Hey Everyone,
So I’m back. I’m back to updating the website every Friday. Suddenly it is summer or something and I want to tell you everything about the bike shop. But you won’t be able to take it all in at once so I’m going to update you about exciting new shop improvements slowly each week.

Three weeks ago I wrote about the Adult Mechanic Class
Two weeks ago I wrote about our Youth Rides
Last week I wrote about Youth Earn-a-Bike

So lets get on to this weeks topic:

Volunteering

There is going to be yet another shift in volunteering here at the Hub. Volunteering is never stale because our space and needs are always changing. In the past we have built organization systems for our warehouse. In 2011 we built a new workshop. As our physical space keeps improving we just need to maintain it which requires different tasks than completely rebuilding.

Jack has taken over responsibilities of our Wednesday and Thursday volunteer nights. Through his vast knowledge of bike parts Jack is suited to organize what is worthwhile to keep in our mountains of donations that we receive. He is also suited well to organize that giant heap of bike parts. He is well suited because we have a great number of volunteers there to assist.

In the past we were scrambling a bit. Like any grassroots non-profit organization we were juggling many different things to keep our programs going. When volunteers showed up we picked a problem and directed them towards it.
We’ve gotten out ahead of some of that work an Jack is in a great position to assist volunteers being proactive instead of reactive to our needs. What this means for our future is a more user friendly warehouse and workshop that will only increase the amount of learning that can happen in our space.

So as a volunteer, when you show up on Wednesday and Thursday nights in the soon future there will be more set jobs to perform that you can master. Also the ability to be trained and learn these tasks will hopefully be easier and more accessible to our volunteer population than ever before.

So how do you become a volunteer? Start at our volunteer orientations which are the First Wednesday of every month at 6pm. This much has not changed.
We can still use volunteers to work with our youth this summer. To learn more about those opportunities please attend a volunteer orientation.
