So we often work with other organizations that are trying to start up their own Earn-a-Bike operations. The Detroit Eastside Community Collaborative (DECC) is one such group that we are working with. They are ramping up to get some kids on bikes this year and they need some mechanic instructors. Here is a job posting they shared with us:

Detroit Eastside Community Collaborative (Earn-A-Bike Program)

Bicycle Mechanic Instructor (Part Time)

Reports to Earn-A-Bike Coordinator

The Detroit Eastside Community Collaborative seeks a part time Bicycle Mechanic Instructor to teach youth ages 12 to 18 how to repair and maintain bicycles. The successful candidate should be experienced working with youth and with a skills set that includes: repair and bicycles maintenance, how to tune-up and troubleshoot problems with flat tires, spokes, gears, chains, brakes and handle bars. The goal is to teach youth a useful skill, build and/or support self-esteem, highlight their accomplishment, increase knowledge about bike safety and greenways, and discover the hidden value in refurbishing used bikes. The successful candidate will also teach how to ride safely in an urban environment and will lead group rides. Classes will be held after school and on the weekend starting in March and run through August.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience as a bicycle mechanic, preferably with cycle shop experience,
  • Experienced teaching bicycle maintenance to groups of youth ( 5 to 15 in class)
  • Experienced rider in an urban setting,
  • Knowledge of bicycle safety,
  • Willing to take ownership and be held accountable for the class instruction,
  • Excellent communicator,
  • Have thorough organizational and time management skills,
  • Have an outgoing personality,
  • General knowledge of shop policies and procedures,
  • The ability to work as a member of a team and work well with students from a wide variety of cultures, backgrounds and experience levels, and
  • Demonstrated public speaking, teaching or coaching experience
  • Extensive knowledge of the bicycle industry and current bicycle products is a plus***

 

DUTIES INCLUDE

  • Instruction/following course outline
  • Upkeep and organization of the tools and pegboards
  • Performing safety checks on completely refurbished bikes
  • punctuality and reliability,
  • Being a team player,
  • Being enthusiastic about cycling
