Hey bearings, how do you feel about bike lanes?
This freep article writes about the plans Detroit ( the last paragraph lists the only city employee commenting on it, if you’re interested in the municipal support implications) has to add 30 miles of bike lanes, starting in Southwest Detroit.
Check out the comments section (here and there) and add your voice to the conversation!

Just as a conversation starter, I found this among the first page of comments on it:
“They should enforce the law preventing bikes from riding side by side more vigorously.

A) Oops, already accounted for under the Detroit municipal code!
Sec. 55-9-5. Riding abreast.
Persons riding bicycles […] upon a highway shall not ride more than two (2) abreast; provided, that this restriction shall not apply to bicycles on paths or parts of highways set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles.

So if you wanted to save roadway space for other traffic, you really SHOULD ride two abreast, right?
It’s the Detroit Department of Public Works or DPW.
Thanks Todd! I’ll update that now.
We’ve gotten a few questions about this in the shop today, and I was hoping the Freep would have posted contact info for those wanting to learn more about the city’s whole process for this, but Prasad was the only city employee listed.
Any suggestions?
Joe, Prasad would probably be your best bet at the City. I wouldn’t say there’s much of a process here. From what I’ve seen bike lanes are getting added into projects where ever the money has been found to do so. It’s going to be a little sporadic, but it’s a good start!
response I received from MDOT last year about planned bike lanes on Grand River.
Hi,
You recently inquired about the Michigan Department of Transportation’s (MDOT’s) policies regarding bike lanes on state highways in the City of Detroit. MDOT’s Metro Region Office, which serves Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and St. Clair counties, currently maintains a policy of looking at the potential for bike lanes during the planning phases for all roadway and construction projects. The Metro Region recently has proposed on-street bike lanes for portions of Michigan Avenue and Gratiot Avenue. We have not, however, committed to a blanket restriping on all state highways within the city limits. We will work with the community, stakeholders and the City’s adopted nonmotorized plan to provide bike lanes and nonmotorized facilities when they are feasible.
We appreciate your interest in nonmotorized transportation. If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact me by email or telephone.
Thanks,
Jeff Edwards
