Hello everyone,
Long time, no web update. Sorry about that. But I’m back! We just got done with a big project (our Youth Bike Give-a-Way) and we are expanding our youth programming so some schedules are changing.
*First, the thank yous*
Thanks to all of our volunteers. Over the past two months we have been working on building up 20″ and smaller bikes to give away. We just finished up the program and gave away a total of 62 bikes to kids. We couldn’t have done that without all of our volunteers. I should also give special shout out to our intern Brad Iott from the Semester in Detroit program from the University of Michigan. He prepared a “safety” pamphlet to be given out with each bike.
Overall it was a huge success. Thank you so much.
*Next, to the schedule changes*
Schools out for summer! And school may be out forever in Detroit if thing keep going the way they are. Since when is it a crime for kids to go to school?
Anyway, our youth are knocking down our door to work on bikes. This means that we are offering our Youth Earn-a-Bike classes on Thursdays. Do you have time from 11:30am-3pm on Thursdays? Let me know and we’ll get you upstairs working with our youth. I’ll arrange for a short orientation to our program and what you’ll need to do.
I’m also still looking for people to volunteer on Saturdays, so let me know if you can help out then as well.
If you are an ally of the Hub, this means that there are no longer Thursday ally times. Ally times are now Tuesdays and Sundays only.
*Mechanics in Training*
If you do volunteer on Saturdays you may see some high school aged youth wearing green aprons. Those are our mechanics in training: Pierre, Jacob, Justin and Brandon. They are staff and should be treated as such. They’ll be with us working all summer. Say hello, they are all pretty awesome.
*The beginning of July is coming*
July 6th is the first Wednesday of the month, this means that there is a volunteer orientation. If you have someone interested in volunteering here, this is the place to start. The orientation starts at 6pm.
July 7th is the first Thursday of the month. This means that towards the end of volunteer night (around 8pm) we will stop working and sit down to talk about the shop.
If you don’t know what volunteer meetings are for, here are a few changes we’ve seen around here because of volunteer suggestions:
– Using old spokes to make wheel hanging hooks
– Building a wall mounted rack to sort forks
– Making volunteer nights longer from 6-8pm to 5-9pm
– The start of what eventually became Fender Bender, one of our community partners
So what do you want to see happen around here?
See ya’ll soon, don’t be a stranger!
