Back Alley Bikes
Back Alley Bikes is Detroit’s nonprofit community bike workshop, making bikes accessible and affordable to the people of Detroit since 1999. Some of our programs include:
- DIY Open Shop: People can come to our workshop to use our tools and parts and learn how to work on their own bikes
- Wrench Learn & Give: A 7 week long class during which participants will repair a bike for our Kids Bike Giveaway
- Volunteer Night: We organize and train volunteers to help us build bikes for our semi-annual Garage Sales and Kids Bike Giveaways and help us with our other programs
The Hub of Detroit is a full service bike shop operated by Back Alley Bikes, serving the Cass Corridor since 2008. All proceeds from sales and service support Back Alley Bikes programs. Our mechanics restore donated bikes for sale at the shop and repair customer bikes. We also offer new and used parts and accessories for sale.
The Hub of Detroit and Back Alley Bikes work on mechanical bikes only. Electric and gas powered bikes are beyond the scope of our organization’s mission and require equipment, tools, and expertise that we do not have.
We do not buy bikes. However we will take donations of bikes and parts in any condition. We are supported through sales and service at The Hub of Detroit, proceeds from Garage Sales, and by donations from individuals and partner organizations.
